Publish a Model to Procore

Objective

To publish models from Autodesk® Navisworks® to Procore using the Procore plugin.

Background

Typically a coordinated model is siloed to office staff running advanced BIM applications on desktop computers. By publishing a model to a Procore project, BIM teams can bridge the gap and empower field personnel with these robust coordinated files. After models have been published to the project, field teams can quickly access the models on mobile devices to reduce installation errors and increase productivity.

Things to Consider

  • Required User Permissions:
    • 'Admin' permissions to the Models tool.
      AND
    • 'Read Only' or higher permissions to the Drawings tool to add and map 2D drawings to the model.
  • Additional Information:
    • The file you want to publish from Navisworks® must be a NWD or NWF file.
    • Individual files larger than 2GB cannot be published to Procore. Laser scans can drastically increase the size of files, so you will need to remove scans if they make a file larger than 2GB.
    • If you are using sectioning to publish specific areas or views of your model in Navisworks®, make sure to use Section Boxes. Section Planes are not currently respected and will not be published to Procore. See Add a Section Box to a Model.

Steps

Follow the steps below to publish a model to Procore.
Note: Click to skip to a section of the tutorial.

  1. Launch Navisworks® and Procore Plugin
  2. Select and Enter Model Information
  3. Add a 2D Sheet
  4. Map the 2D Sheet to the Model
  5. Publish the Model

Step 1: Launch Navisworks® and the Procore Plugin

  1. Open the Navisworks® application on your computer.
  2. Click the Procore tab to open the Procore plugin.
  3. Click Publish to open the Models window.
  4. Open the model you want to publish.
Note: Make sure the model is associated with a project in Procore. See Associate a Model with a Procore Project.

Step 2: Select and Enter Model Information

  1. New or Existing Model: In the Models window, choose whether you want to upload a new model or publish a new version of a model that has already been published:
    • To publish a new model: Click New Model.
    • To publish a new version of a model: Hover over the model in the list and click Publish Version.
Note: The name of the model file must be the same as the original version.
  2. Model Name: If publishing a new model, enter a name for the model in the field.
Note: This will be the display name for viewing the model in Procore.
  3. Model Status: Select one of the following statuses from the drop-down menu under Status:
    • Coordination: The model is still being coordinated and may be referenced for general purposes, but is not meant to be used for installation.
    • Construction: The model has been fully coordinated and ready to be used for installation or verification of installation.
    • As-Built: The model has been updated to reflect work in place.
  4. Home: The viewpoint you select as the 'Home Viewpoint' will be the thumbnail for the model, as well as the area the model opens to in the viewer. This viewpoint should provide a general overview of the model and be easy to navigate from.
    1. To add a home viewpoint, click Add.
Note: The viewpoint is automatically added.
    2. Click Save.
Note: If you want to edit the viewpoint, click Edit and adjust the view of your model in Navisworks®.
  5. Views (optional): If you have created specific viewpoints for the model in Navisworks®, you can add these viewpoints here to upload them into the Models tool on the Procore iOS application. Users can then view individual viewpoints on their iOS mobile devices. See View Models (iOS).
    1. To add a viewpoint, click Add.
    2. Mark the checkbox next to the views you wish to add.
      Notes:
      • You can add multiple viewpoints at one time.
      • Imported viewpoints will respect section planes created in Navisworks®.
    3. Click Add to confirm your selection(s).
Note: To remove a viewpoint, click on the delete (x) icon.
  6. To add 2D drawing sheets associated with the model, see Add a 2D Sheet section below.

Step 3: Add a 2D Sheet

  1. In the 2D Sheets section, click Add.
  2. Select a drawing from the Drawing drop-down menu.
Note: If your project uses drawing areas, you must select an area from the Drawing Area drop-down menu first.
  3. Select one of the following options to enter the elevation of the sheet:
    • Choose an existing level.
      1. Select a level from the drop-down menu.
    • Create a new level.
      1. Select a location from the drop-down menu.
      2. Click an element in the model to automatically calculate the elevation.
Note: An elevation will automatically be calculated in the default units of your Navisworks® model.
  4. Click Next.
Note: You can add another 2D sheet before publishing your model. However, you will first need to map this sheet to the model. See Map the 2D Sheet to the Model below.

Step 4: Map the 2D Sheet to the Model

  1. Click Start to select two opposite points on the drawing.
Tip!  We recommend selecting a grid line intersection within the project footprint.
Note: The first point you select is labelled 'A' and the second is 'B'. If you want to clear the points and select them again, click Clear.
  2. Click Done.
Note: If you need to readjust the points, you can hover over the drawing thumbnail and click Edit.
  3. Click Start to select the same two points on the model.
Tip!  We recommend turning on grid lines in Navisworks® for more precision. This setting is located under View > Show Grid.
Note: The grid line intersection must have an object on the Z axis.
  4. Click Save to confirm the points.
Note: If you want to readjust the points, hover over the thumbnail and click Edit.
  5. Confirm that the points on the drawing and model match, then click Done.
  6. Optional: If you want to add additional 2D sheets, click Add next to Associated 2D Sheets and repeat the steps in Add a 2D Sheet
 Important

Make sure that you have a section box in place and visible on screen before publishing the model. A section box isolates irrelevant content and ensures only the model itself is being published. See Add a Section Box to a Model.

Step 5: Publish the Model

  1. Optional: If you want to publish the model locally on your computer instead of through Procore's cloud services, mark the checkbox next to Publish Locally
Publishing locally generally takes much longer than through the cloud, but it's the best option if you need to publish a locked model file or you've experienced issues related to the Appearance Profiler in Navisworks®.
  2. When you're ready to publish the model, click Publish
Note: As long as you are using the Procore plugin version 7.10.0 or higher, the model files will be processed on Procore's servers. You can check the status of the file processing on the Uploads tab of the plugin.
  3. After the model has successfully published, click Done on the message that shows.
  4. To view the published model in Procore, navigate to the Models tool on Procore's web or mobile applications. See View a Model (Web)(iOS), or (Android).
